American Motors produced just 1,430 Rambler American Custom two-door station wagons in 1960.
This example has been given the restomod treatment, with a conversion to a sedan delivery-type vehicle with a cargo-type rear interior that now gets its motive power from a modern General Motors-sourced powertrain. With custom paint and a high-luxurycustomized passenger cabin for two, this Rambler is further customized with tailgate trim straps fabricated from its original AMC factory roof rack. It is also equipped with aftermarket air conditioning. This station wagon is now powered by a Chevrolet 4.3-liter OHV V-6 engine mated to a General Motors Turbo Hydra-Matic 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission.
The engine receives its fuel mixture via a Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor topped by a custom-painted air cleaner, with chromed rocker covers that are also visible. The Rambler is also equipped with a Chevrolet S-10 rear end that the seller says has 3.08 Positraction gearing. No functional issues, smoke or powertrainleaks. The engine bay appears to be generally clean. the custom paint dates to 2014 and is in good overall condition, noting a few scratches and swirls. The body seals are said to be in as-new condition.
As to rust, some bodywork was performed before the Rambler was repainted. The car is now equipped with Chevrolet side mirrors. The chrome presents as being in good, undamaged condition. The glass is reported to be in good shape and free of cracks. All lighting is described as functional. The underside presents as generally clean. this Rambler has been turned from a station wagon into a quasi-sedan delivery by removal of the rear seat, which will not be included in the sale. The carpet is said to date to 2014 and be in good condition. The Rambler is fitted with aftermarket air conditioning and heating that is reported to be functional. in. âWâ engine is a rare sight in a 1959 Chevrolet sedan, but thatâs what the factory installed in this Bel Air. The original transmission was a two-speed Powerglide automatic (further adding to the uniqueness), upgraded to a ST-10 four-speed manual transmission from a 1962 Chevy Impala. The engine has less than 1,000 miles on
it since the rebuild. Three âdeucesâ top the intake manifold. The seller says cold starts are âquick, â even after the car has sat for a while, no smoke and that the engine stays on fast idle until itâs warmed up. The only reported weeping is from the breather tube.
The transmission was rebuilt with new bearings and synchronizers at the same time as the engine rebuild and is controlled by a Hurst Competition shifter. A frame-on restoration was performed two years ago and included a small rust repair to the left rear quarter panel before the paintwork. The seller reports a couple very minor paint chips and some minor wiper scratches on the windshield. All the side glass is new,
as are the seals and window felts. All the lights work, including the glovebox light. The interior was restored with all new custom upholstery and carpeting, per the seller.
The headliner is also new, and the interior trim components are perfect. Gauge functions are reported as fine except that the fuel gauge can be sporadic. A Moon Equipment tachometer was strapped to the steering column. The door armrests are Impala items. The radio and speaker are new. The suspension has been updated and lowered in front with tubular upper and lower control arms. A dual master cylinder was added along with front disc brakes that feature drilled and slotted rotors. New bushings were installed in the
rear trailing arms and the shock absorbers are new. The steering is manual, there isnât any play.
The tires are six years old with 8/32-inch remaining tread. The front tires are sized 215/65R15 and the rears are 235/60R15. The custom wheels are from American Racing they âlook new. â
