Restored vintage 1969 Honda Z50A Japan Domestic Monkey Bike.
Very rare Japanese version of the US mini trail. Mostly found overseas and not in the states. Fully restored. It has added chrome and aluminum rims. The frame was powdered coated. The 49cc engine was overhauled. I was told the bike was acquired by a gentleman in Michigan who is a renownedcollector and restorer of vintage Japanese domestic Honda's. Runs like a charm. Below is some history of the Honda Monkey Bike. Please view detailed images. Contact us for any questions. HONDA 1969 Z50A JAPAN DOMESTIC MONKEY BIKE Monkey bike is a motorcycle term pre-owned to refer specificallyto a line of small, low-powered motorcycles by that name manufactured by Honda, but can also refer in general to similar motorcycles made by other companies.
The term monkey bike is more commonly pre-owned in the United Kingdom than in North America, where similar type motorcycles are often called mini bikes. Commonly, a monkey bike is defined as amotorcycle with a single-cylinder, four-stroke enginethat can vary in sizebetween 49cc and 90cc, and that has a seat height of less than 22ins (55cm). This type of motorcycle is named for the crouching, supposedlymonkey-like, position the rider has to assume when sitting on such a small motorcycle.
Honda's 1st monkey bike, the Z100, was launched in 1961, but other small, compact motorcycles had preceded it, for example the welbike pre-owned by the British Armed Forces in the 2nd World War. Theimmediate origin of Honda's line of monkey bikes was a miniature motorcycledeveloped for use in a Japanese amusement park. The popularity of this ridespurred the company to make road-worthy miniature motorcycles. The 1st monkeybikes made by Honda inthe 1960's, such as the CZ100 and Z50M, had nosuspension, 5 in (12.7 cm) wheels, and many could be folded and fitted intothe trunk of a car for transport.
Later Honda monkey bike models, such as the Z50A from 1969 and the Z50J from 1974, featured suspension and 8 in (20.3 cm)wheels. More features on later Honda monkey bikes also includedseparately folding handle bars, larger fuel tanks, and front and rear racks. Sincethe 1970s, Honda has released several types of monkey bikes for the Japanesemarket, such as the Honda Gorilla, Honda Monkey, and Honda Ape. Othercompanies, like Kawasaki, Zhen Hua and Jinchang, also manufacture motorcyclemodels similar to Honda's monkey bikes.
Many of these motorcycles are producedfor the local Japanese or Chinese market, and have to be specially imported inthe rest of the world. Somemonkey bikes are made to drive on regular roads, while others are specificallydesigned for track racing, or off-road use. Many monkey bike riders andenthusiasts customize their motorcycles, tuning and styling their monkey biketo make the engine more powerful, or to add new features such as front or rearsuspension, or a different exhaust system. Monkey bike organizations and clubsoften organize special runs and races to showcase these miniature motorcycles.

Herter’s c.1970 Hunter Bay Trail Bike On offer here is a fantastic piece of kit.
Herter’s Hunting and Fishing catalog offered this mini-bike for sale to, as the advertising says, “fishermen, beach use, the tundra, trapper and camper” alike. The original Mark I was offered for $199, while subsequent models could be bought for $229, and were sold
“direct – no dealer or jobber profits to pay”. It was powered by a variable speed Tecumseh or Lauson pull-start, 5bhp engine and although it will fit in the trunk of a car, could haul a rider and up to 400 pounds of gear, according to the sales brochure.
Please note, this was not tested. Neither was the brochure’s claim that it “will go anywhere a packhorse will go”. Interestingly, Herter’s also offered imported shrunken heads made from real skin and hair by primitive Peru(vian) Indians ($4.60) as well as a range of famous Hudson Bay all-real-mohair teddy bears. The Mini-bike offered is in great original condition and sports the optional head and tail lamps. Road-registered with a California
title (I kid you not), the only departure from its original specification, is the rather robust sissy-bar, complete with trident tip. The bike runs good and is a blast, drawing a crowd wherever it goes. And colorful comments on the street-legality!
