Pontiac’s Trans Am package for the 1973 Firebird gave it a dedicated 455-cubic-inch engine, standard four-speed manual transmission and a high-grip suspension.

The team at PMD then added aero-enhancing spoilers and an exclusive hood graphic to produce a pony car worthy of the Trans Am name. The engine is bored 0.030 over and features a RamAir IV camshaft and Rhoads valve lifters. The distributor has been upgraded to electronic ignition as well. The original Muncie four-speed transmission was replaced with a Doug Nash five-speed manual, which has a very low first gear. The rear end features a 4.11:1 final-drive ratio.

The 400-cubic-inch V-8 engine is original to the car, with the engine’s block stamping indicating that the Oldsmobile powerplant was indeed built for a 1967 model year 442.

He also says it has never been rebuilt, although the oil pan gasket and timing chain were replaced about three years ago and the original Quadrajet carburetor was also

recently rebuilt. The oil pan gasket replacement cured the engine of leaks. the engine starts easily when cold, with only a few pumps of the gas pedal, and with no smoke. A Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 three-speed automatic transmission is paired with the engine. good working order, shifts smoothly and doesn’t appear to have any leaks or weeping.

A black vinyl interior complements the Saffron exterior and is in largely original condition.

It’s not known whether the engine in this Model A is original to the car, but it’s correct for a Ford of this vintage.

Every 1931 Model A was powered by Ford’s 201-cu. in. flathead inline-four, which had a compression ratio of 4.22:1, received its fuel through either a Zenith or Holley double-venturi carburetor, and produced 40 horsepower.

During the restoration, this Model A was converted over to 12-volt electricals, and received dual exhausts. The engine is said to start immediately after the fuel valve is turned on and the manual choke engaged. It does not smoke or use excessive oil. The Ford transmission was removed and replaced by a five-speed Borg Warner T-5 manual, a gearbox that allows the car to cruise at speed but with lower RPMs.

A view beneath the hood reveals a Per Tronix electronic ignition system and distributor, along with generally clean presentation, with only minor surface corrosion visible in a few spots. the paint still presents well after a waxing, describing it as being in overall very good condition. Some chips exist, but the bodywork has no dents and does not need a repaint. The two-tone color scheme is augmented by scarlet pinstriping.

For 1979, the K-code 403-cubic-inch V-8 was designated the “6.6-litre” and was provided by the Oldsmobile division.

To enhance the original 185 horsepower and 315 lb-ft ratings, this 1979 Trans Am is powered by a non-original 403 engine, rebuilt within the past five years by a previous owner, and now featuring an aftermarket Edelbrock intake

manifold and Demon four-barrel carburetor for additional power. A dual-exhaust conversion with Flowmaster mufflers provide the muscular tone that these F-Bodies were known for. Underhood upgrades include a modernized A/C compressor and drier along with a host of new components: heater core, radiator, heater hoses, fan clutch, fuel tank and sending unit, and rubber fuel lines.

A rebuilt alternator was installed in 2019 and a recent comprehensive tuneup included new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump and filter, and a Kand N air filter. the big mill “runs very good and strong” and starts and idles quickly following one push of the gas pedal. Equipped with a shift kit, the 700R4 four-speed

automatic transmission upgrade, also installed within the last five years, provides an overdrive gear for more relaxed highway rides. Final drive is via a rear end with 3.23 gears.

the transmission shifts cleanly through the gears. Featuring GM’s trademark dual-control-arm front suspension and live rear axle with leaf springs, the unibody relies on Hotchkis subframe connectors and polyurethane bushings to enhance handling. The Pontiac “Snowflake” WS6 alloy wheels are wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires measuring 235/60R15 with 2017 date codes. The remaining underpinnings are unmodified from their original state.
