The engine is said to start immediately when the choke is pulled out, with no smoke. Thecolumn-shifted three-speed manual transmission is described as still shifting gears properly, with no problems reported. No leaks or weeps associated with the powertrain are noted. A look beneath the clamshell hood reveals good paint on the engine block and rocker cover, with the color chipped away in only a few locations.
Some minor surface corrosion can be seen on the lower carburetor body. A copper-infused air filter is present, as is a new fuel filter. The ignition coil, associated wires and heater hoses all show as virtually new. This Special Deluxe is optioned with extras that include dual side mirrors and squarish fog lamps. Having been restored by a plating shop, all of the carâschrome is straight, free of pitting and in visibly very good condition. dyno sheets showing better than 500 horsepower, thanks in part to the modified crank from a 400 small block that allows for a 3.75-inch stroke. Fuel is drawn through a Quick Fuel Technologies HR Series carburetor, atop an
Edelbrock Super Victor single-plane aluminum intake. Spent gases are carried out by a set of Hedman headers and a dual exhaust that exit at the back end of the truck. The engine is bolted to a GM Turbo Hydra-Matic 700R4 trans, good for three gears and an overdrive.
The transmission includes a new FTI Street Racer 9.5-inch lockup torque converter, and a Band M Quic Silver shifter inside the cab. The transmission shifts with no vibration or unexpected noise. The truck is finished in Plum Crazy purple paint applied in 2019. âshow qualityâ and rates as 9.4 out of 10, with no swirls or blemishes. Half-ton Chevrolet pickups in 1950 received the fabled Chevrolet OHV straight-six as their powerplant.
For its application in the 3100, the engine displaced 216.5 cubic inches. It was fed by a single downdraft carburetor, had a compression ratio of 6.6:1 and was rated by the manufacturer at 92 horsepower. The engine in this 3100 matches the
VIN tag and is therefore said to be original to the truck. Besides being converted to 12 volts, the engineâs mechanical rebuild also saw the road draft tube eliminated. A PCV valve was installed, which allows gases in the crankcase to be evacuated. A breather cap has been added to the rocker cover to prevent debris from inadvertently entering the engine.
An electrical cutoff switch was also added with the conversion to 12-volt electricals. A new fuel tank is now located behind the rear axle, and the filler tube was relocated to the rear fender on the driverâs side. The fuel lines, radiator, alternator, starter and distributor were all renewed or replaced. The column-shifted three-speed manual transmission was rebuilt at the same time as the engine and is said to change gears perfectly.
